The beginning of the Rotary Club of Wanchai was rather similar to the world's first Rotary Club... with a gathering of a few friends including Patrick Marie Herbert (later became the charter or founding President), Tony Turner (later became the second President of the Club) and SunnyOng..

It started with a few casual breakfast meetings in late 1989 and the first formal luncheon was held on 15 January 1990.

The Rotary Club of Wanchai was admitted to Rotary International on 18 April 1990.  The official birthdate was 11 May 1990 when the Club was officially chartered during the celebration of 60 years of Rotary in Hong Kong
